Cardboard Civilization

2024
Installation
Cardboard, laserjet paper, acetone
140 x 100 x 170cm
Cardboard, a recyclable material commonly used for packaging and storing purposes, takes on a deeper meaning in South Korea’s political protests, where it serves as a makeshift comfort for those fighting against repression and seeking justice. This project represents the people who stand up for democratic freedom and justice, echoing past struggles when democracy was absent and freedom was denied.

The installation uses white cardboard as its foundation, representing the individuals who partake in making their voices heard, with textures created by transferring laser-printed images onto the surface using acetone. The repetitive, labor-intensive process mirrors the physical fatigue felt during protests, symbolizing the perseverance of those fighting for change.

The piece is designed to be viewed first at eye level, then from an elevated perspective. The imagery on top is revealed as viewers look down, symbolizing the steps society must take toward progress and the ongoing journey toward justice.
